Hmmm... Well, take one of the key people responsible for Nascar Racing 2003, after he is done suing people for reverse engineering his code and ready to start working on something... partner him up with... some professional sports team owner (I think, I don't remember who it was but I assume that's where the money comes in), create a racing community and you have iRacing. Arca sim racing uses the IS2 physics engine, same as all the EA Nascar games. The iRacing concept has been around for quite some time but is finally open to the public.
Last two FAQ questions on their site:
I am familiar with NASCAR Racing: 2003, is this a mod of NASCAR Racing: 2003 Season?
No. We used the NR2003 code as a starting point, taking advantage of its greatest strengths, such as the net code, which allows full fields of drivers to race online in real time, and the replay system, which enables drivers to review their on-track performance. But every major section of the code has been substantially improved for the iRacing.com simulation, and large portions are all new.
Do you sell or support the NASCAR Racing: 2003 simulation?
No. While we own the NASCAR Racing: 2003 engine, neither we nor any other commercial entity has a legal right to distribute or derive profit from NR2003. After the license that Vivendi (the publisher that owned NASCAR Racing: 2003 before we purchased the rights) had to use the trademarks involved in NR2003 expired in 2004, any remaining copies had to be removed from shelves. |

| There are two key factors that have to be considered... running a small league like this costs significant amount of money in order to be successful. Each racer has to buy a game (normal game prices are $50), a domain had to be purchased, a web host has to be paid to host the website, a team speak server has to be paid for, a race server has to be paid and you have to hope your drivers are willing to chip in. That doesn't count the time spent to keep a website up and the stats up and the software up-to-date. I don't disagree, $150 a year seems like a lot (and I would likely pay by month in case I got bored so that's $20 a month) but compared to other games, that isn't unheard of. Community gaming is where the industry is going, look at World of Warcraft (which possibly is what is keeping PC gaming alive). Players paid for the original game, the first addon and the second. If they are dedicated they bought at release, that's $150 in software. Then they pay $10 a month just to play the games they bought. In reality, this type of community system is what is needed for racing leagues... drivers pay to be apart of the community that has rules enforced by the people you are paying. |
